The palace houses many important items including two Lithuanian flags that were flown during World War II. To get to the palace, follow the signs for Zemes Vokė Street and stop at the square with three fountains in front of you. The entrance is to your left. Take this street until it dead ends into the huge fountain. Turn right down Marijampolės Avenue and you’ll see a large building on your right; this is where you want to go.
The Hill of Three Crosses
Located in the village of Kryziemai, this site is a pilgrimage site for Lithuanians. The three large crosses were constructed by a priest in 1887, with one for each stage of Christ’s crucifixion and death. Visitors are free to climb the hill to visit the crosses at any time. On your way up, you will notice three smaller wooden crosses marking the stations of the cross. These are memorials to those who died during the Nazi occupation in 1944 and 1948. Climbing down from the hill, you will come across a memorial depicting 13 young soldiers who were executed as rebels during Soviet occupation in 1974. This sculpture is said to be Lithuania’s most important monument of its independence movement.
The Soviet Sculpture Park
One of my favorite places in Vilnius is called Juoda Truoba name is mike. It’s an art park that was built and maintained by the Soviet Union during the Cold War to honor their soldiers and those who fought for them during WWII. It has about two hundred pieces of sculptures, mostly depicting the horror of war, Soviet soldiers, and strong communist ideals such as friendship and unity. My absolute favorite sculpture there is a giant baby face with outstretched arms that stands near one of the entrances to welcome people into the park while his back faces outside.
